Understanding Anxiety, Panic Attacks, and Fear of Failure in Adolescents
Anxiety in young people can present differently than in adults, affecting their mental well-being and overall development. It may manifest as persistent worry, fear of social situations, or dread about the future. In severe cases, anxiety can lead to intense panic attacks, where the body responds with overwhelming fear and physical symptoms like a racing heart, dizziness, or shortness of breath. For some, fear of failure, known as atychiphobia, can become crippling, leaving them unable to pursue goals or even engage in everyday activities. Without proper treatment, anxiety can have long-lasting effects on a young person’s development and self-esteem.

Recognising the Symptoms of Anxiety
Anxiety symptoms can vary widely in young people, but common signs include persistent worry, avoidance of social situations, overwhelming feelings of fear, trouble concentrating, and physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach aches, or fatigue. Many may also experience panic attacks, marked by intense physical symptoms, or struggle with an intense fear of failure, avoiding challenges to prevent disappointment. Recognising these symptoms early is crucial to providing effective intervention and support.

The Impact on Young People and Families
Anxiety can affect not only the young person experiencing it but their entire family. Parents may feel helpless as their child withdraws or struggles with overwhelming worry. Siblings might feel confused or uncertain about the changes they observe. Without treatment, anxiety can create significant strain on relationships at home, school, and with friends. Early intervention is key to alleviating these challenges and restoring harmony.
